Let's consider what the TI announcement says about Amati's market strategy. The use of programmable DSP cores from TI will give them an alternative to using dedicated DMT chips from Motorola, ADI, Alcatel, etc. This opens the door to significantly value-added products with a very fast time to market. TI specializes in cores that have multiple processors in a single housing, and from Steenburgens comment in the press release it sounds like they intend to use these to put multiple ADSL transceivers in a single rack space at the CO. I have used these TI DSPs before and they are excellent parts; assuming that Amati has the appropriate talent, they can potentially have systems out the door before production is ramped up on the first generation DMT chips.
