Re: Vapor!

A kind source was good enough to correct some of my observations by emailing me the following:

A correction regarding IBM's small drive. It is being implemented in a CompactFlash Type II (5mm thick) card package. This is significantly smaller than a PC Card, however the CF Type II card can be inserted into a PC Card slot with an adapter just as the present CF Type II cards can.

Slots for CF Type II cards are already in Palm PCs, and Auto PCs.

I saw one statement that someone would rather have a $10 Clik! media get damaged than a $200 IBM drive. The problem with this thinking is that putting a damaged Clik! media into a Clik! drive is likely to take out the $200 Clik! drive also and if the Clik! drive is in the host system (camera, etc.) then the host system will not operate until it is repaired. A CF card (flash or magnetic disk) if damages is not likely to damage anythig in the host system and you can just insert another CF card and away you go.

Very well though out. This is something that had not occurred to me before. The dubious reliability of this media will indeed put a device out of commission if it is installed inside a portable device. The entire unit would have to be sent in for repairs to get it working, just because of a faulty drive. Using a small external solution such as IBM's disc drive will add storage, yet not cripple the camera if it fails. Simply pop the whole thing out of it's card slot, and replace. External Vapor! units are bulky and unwieldy, but are the better choice over an internal Vapor! drive due to these concerns.

Vapor! is sure to suffer from the same problems that removable media exhibits nowadays i.e. Zip Clicking Death, and discs that carry the plague will infect the OEM drive inside a camera.

Very informative email. Thank you!
