I don't have any statistics or data, but it seems to me that productivity has been pretty much "tweaked" throughout this great land of ours. Lots of middle managers are on the street because of mergers. All you get is telephone menus now no matter whom you call. There are lines in discount stores at the two (out of eight) cash registers which are attended. You get one gram of peanuts for your lunch on airlines. I won't even mention the shortage of nurses.

I question how much more productivity can be wrung out of the system without causing a rapid deceleration in quality and safety in all aspects of our lives.

If I'm right, then profits must flatten or fall.
