Does anyone know why smart cards have taken off in Asia and Europe

and we are basically just getting going with them here. I received
the RCOM package too (that see through smart card does look cool)
and in their literature they say it will be a $2 billion dollar market in the next 3-4 years. They also state they know of one project alone that might require up to 200 million cards.

Is it true that Asia and Europe are more likely to use smart card technology than us here in the US? Why? I thought the US would be the first place to jump on this technology? And from reading the literature and actually seeing the card you would think this would take off like wild fire.......eh?
