Microsoft lowers curtain on MIPS
By Norvin Leach

Microsoft Corp. is dropping the MIPS versions of Windows NT, BackOffice and Visual C++ because there is no significant market for the products, Microsoft officials said yesterday.

In fact, the Redmond, Wash., company has no records of any MIPS customers in the United States. Most of its customers are in Asia, predominantly in Japan.

The decision comes on the heels of NEC Corp.'s announcement earlier this week that it would stop manufacturing MIPS hardware.

NEC, which is the world's major MIPS manufacturer, worked with Microsoft to build the MIPS version of NT. Silicon Graphics Inc. also produces a MIPS system, although it cannot run NT.

Version 4.0 of NT Server and Workstation will be the last MIPS version that Microsoft will build. NT Product Marketing Manager Rich Tong said Microsoft would continue to support established customers and would provide an upgrade offer to move to another platform.
