Key party backs Brazil's Cardoso re-election bid

By John Miller

SAO PAULO, March 8 (Reuters) - The re-election hopes of Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso were bolstered on Sunday when an influential political party promised to back him in this year's presidential race.

The Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) voted overwhelmingly at a party convention in Brasilia to support Cardoso and not field its own candidate in Oct. 4 elections, strengthening Cardoso's chance of winning in a first-round vote.
