I wish I were as confident as you that the Indonesian government is not going to do something lunatic.

A lot of emotions have been stirred in Indonesia, and many of those involve the "evils of the Western World". Indonesians are absolutely fantastic at passing the buck for their own failures, and it seems likely that foreigners are going to be the whipping boys for the next round of recriminations.

In an effort to sideline criticism of its incompetent governance and crisis responsiveness, the Government may try to turn this tide of negative sentiment into a crusade, and say "Shove your aid!" to the IMF in the same way they did to the Dutch government in 1994. If this is the case, it will not be a particularly fun time to be a foreigner in this country.

Having been almost murdered in a riot in Jakarta around this time last year (the MPR elections), I really hope they don't do a better job this time around,   la 1965. If that happens, Telkom stock will be trading at fractions of a dollar and not the USD 8 you speak of.
