The sub $1000 PC does not appear to be a good thing for the huge PC industry & Intel - at least for several months. This is a tremendous erosion of prices that the industry has grown fat on. Industry sources outside of Intel have said that unit demand is strong and the outlook for PC unit sales and overall computing environment sales is good. More of the budget may go into networking, software, year 2000 fixes, and other things because money has been freed up from the PC budget and these items are a priority. Eventually market demand should outgrow the faltering in prices. This could, however, lead to more shake-ups or shake-outs in the industry.
