<A> Motorola Is Ready to Rock in Fast-Moving ADSL Industry With Sampling of Its CopperGold Solution
AUSTIN, Texas--
Transceiver's Unprecedented Low Power, Functionality and
Flexibility Enable Equipment Providers to Meet Telcos' Price and
Performance Requirements
The ADSL industry received a boost Monday as Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector sampled the award-winning CopperGold ADSL Solution to its customers.
Designed to offer high performance, long reach and the lowest power implementation available in a general-purpose, embedded DSP architecture (DSP56300), Motorola's CopperGold leapfrogs existing ADSL solutions.
This unique combination of attributes allows equipment manufacturers to meet telcos' stringent price and performance requirements, and will enable widespread, low-cost megabit access to the Internet and other multimedia applications, in what industry analysts expect to be a multibillion-dollar industry.
Low cost, low power and long reach have been cited as the key components for mass deployment of ADSL services.
With this in mind, the CopperGold Solution was designed as a multipurpose modem platform. Initially targeted for ADSL, its high level of flexibility makes it well suited for a variety of modem applications. This approach makes it easy to address alternate specifications such as those under development by the Universal ADSL Working Group.
The CopperGold ADSL Solution is ideal for the central office, where power and board space are at a premium, as well as at the customer premises, where affordability and quality of service are driving factors.
Dissipating just one watt, the CopperGold Transceiver is the industry's most highly integrated solution, embodying the digital bit pump, standard compliant data interface, and analog front-end (including A/D and D/A).
"Westell has a long-standing commitment to quality and interoperability, and working with Motorola will allow us to continue that tradition," said Marc J. Zionts, chief executive officer of Westell Inc.
"The CopperGold Solution's high level of performance and flexibility should enable us to rapidly develop products that meet today's needs for interactive multimedia and high-speed Internet services over existing copper."
"We are proud of the role we are playing in the development of tomorrow's communications network," said Hector Ruiz, president and general manager of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector.
"Motorola is committed to enabling our customers to assume and maintain leadership positions in this fast-moving industry by delivering the most competitive, highest quality semiconductor systems."
By utilizing a general-purpose, embedded DSP architecture, the CopperGold Transceiver offers flexibility while optimizing the power, cost and board-space advantages of a highly integrated, applications- specific, silicon design.
Through the use of the CopperGold application programming interface (API) and host controller, designers can set a variety of user-controlled options to customize the system. One of the first commercially viable echo-canceled systems, Motorola's CopperGold Solution can also be configured for use in FDM systems, to accommodate interoperability with lower-performing ADSL modems.
In addition, as the standards evolve and the industry matures, the CopperGold Solution allows manufacturers to easily add enhanced functionality through simple software upgrades.
The CopperGold ADSL Solution includes the highly integrated transceiver (MC145650), the performance-optimizing and power-saving line driver (MC03AX1456) and a wide array of complementary components tailored for specific applications such as Ethernet transceivers (MC68160), ATM Cell Processors (MC92501), and many host-control options (MPC860, MPC860SAR, MCX683xx, MC68EN302/360).
Motorola's CopperGold ADSL Solution is fully supported with evaluation boards, APIs, a system analyzer and Motorola's world-class applications support. For more information on the CopperGold family, visit Motorola's Web site at motorola.com/adsl.
