Marq:

Unfortunately the new VJ++ sounds very good doesn't it? Like the debugger part and the part about what appears to be seamless integration. (I understand MSFT's full new set of tools coming out this summer will be very good.) You are right - I think DHTML will do well on the front end. But still I think MSFT just killed the portability issue and based on what I have seen at IT conferences and elsewhere developers are not going to be too fond of this. Plus I'm sure they will see that this is a really blatant attempt by MSFT to muck up a good thing in JAVA.

My guess is SUNW will be going after MSFT in court big big time. It seems fairly clear that MSFT is picking and choosing here and I'm sure SUNW won't be too happy about that. Whether SUNW actually succeeds in stopping MSFT is another story. (No wonder MSFT wanted JAVA to go to a standards group!)

RE: Affect on BORL I think we are OK believe it or not. Some may want MSFT above eveyone else but I do suspect the JAVA market is big enough and broad enough that BORL could and should succeed.

No I don't agree that BORL should follow, at least for now. What you call shrewd I call typical MSFT monopolistic stuff-it-in-our-faces behavior. (Really telling. But give them credit they do come with all guns firing!)

BTW the window I was talking about was the pure JAVA window. MSFT will and has not taken this route. They won't and have not because it undermines their strengths. This still leaves BORL a sizeable opportunity in the JAVA/middleware trenches.

The language/platform is just way too good for many hard core developers to ignore. A half-baked version like MSFT's will appeal to some but I don't think to all. Hopefully everyone will revolt! (Unfortunately the MSFT product looks pretty good for a large scale revolt to happen.)

Shane.
