Edward J. Zander Named President of Sun Microsystems Computer Company
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- January 31, 1995 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced that Edward J. Zander has been appointed president of Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC). Zander had been president of Sun's software subsidiary, SunSoft, for the past four years. SMCC, with revenues exceeding $4 billion, is the world's top supplier of open, network computing for the burgeoning enterprise computing market.
Zander, 48, has been an executive officer at Sun since November, 1987. In his new role, he will continue reporting to Scott McNealy, chief executive officer and chairman of Sun. Zander has more than 24 years of experience in high technology, spanning engineering, marketing and executive management. Prior to heading SunSoft, Zander was vice president of corporate marketing for Sun. During his career, he has also held a variety of senior management positions at Apollo Computer, Data General Corp. and Raytheon Company.
"Ed brings a wealth of management experience to SMCC," said McNealy. "He has demonstrated success in all facets of management. His keen understanding of Sun's strategy and customer requirements will be invaluable in expanding SMCC's leadership position. My management team has done an excellent job of delivering growth and profits for Sun. I am pleased that we have the strength to be able to promote from within our organization."
Under Zander, SunSoft has established its Solaris(TM) operating environment as the leader -- in both revenue and units -- of the UNIX(R) market. The company also has the leading UNIX development environment called Sun WorkShop(TM), and the highest-volume system and network management platform in Solstice(TM). Plus, the broad SolarNet(TM) product line is well recognized as one of the leading suites for connecting, integrating and managing everything from PCs to mainframe-class systems and networks.
"Major corporations are moving at a rapid pace to implement a client-server architecture so they can manage their enterprises for strategic advantage," said Zander. "SMCC has all the necessary ingredients to migrate organizations to distributed computing while still offering superior products to its traditional technical customers. I can think of no organization that is better positioned to succeed in the market."
Effective immediately, Zander will move from his former position to SMCC, replacing J. Phillip Samper, who announced he was stepping down earlier this month. McNealy said, "We are well under way in finding a replacement for Ed." In the meantime, Pat Deagman, SunSoft's vice president of finance will be managing day-to-day operations.
Sun Microsystems, Inc., is an integrated portfolio of business that supply distributed computing technologies, products and services. Its innovative open network computing solutions include workstations and multiprocessing servers, operating system software, silicon designs and other value-added technologies. Founded in 1982, Sun is a Fortune 150 company headquartered in Mountain View, California.
