RE: 3rd Generation vs CDMA

What is it that 3G systems are going to be capable of offering in 3-4 years that cdmaOne will not have in a year or two?

It seems to me, that the 3G talk was developed to once again remove focus from cdmaOne, and it may have succesfully done that, at least for now. I, for one, do not view cdmaOne as a second generation system, but rather a third generation. First generation was analog, second generation was the digitization of this analog system, (the long and strong theory to transmit voice) and third generation is the full and ultimate efficient use of the spectrum to spread data accross all available channels - which is what cdmaOne does. The current version of cdmaOne was optimized for voice, because service providers wanted to focus on that first. But it is fully capable of migrating to everything the 3G designers are asking for. I believe it is a misnomer to refer to CDMA (in any form) as a secnd generation system. Early 1999 will see IS-95-B, and data rates greater than 56 Kbps, and late 1999 will see the release of IS-95-c and data rates up to 2.5 Mbps. I think I read that the 3G systems will be able to reach 2 Mbps in fixed applications by the year 2003.

Somebody help me out here, what do the 3G backers want that cdmaOne will not be able to deliver next year?
