Zack - One reasonable measure for PE of a growth stock is its
growth rate. Simply put, if earnings are growing at 15% a year
15 is a good (for buying purposes) PE, if earnings are growing
at 20% a year 20 is a good (for buying purposes) PE, etc. I
would love to see INTC earn $4.50 this year. Compared to
$4.03 thats about a 12% growth. For INTC to be worthy of a 15
PE it ought to earn at least $4.6x for the year. Having seen INTC
pull a few negative surprises (memory price writedown) my confidence
is less than it was a year ago. Giving them the benefit of the
doubt they may have taken every possible piece of bad news in the
last earnings report just to clean up future earnings reports. Let's
say they show earnings of $1.25 in a supposedly "flat" next quarterlyu
report. THEN its time to start thinking about $100. Cause then a PE
of 25 is justified. At $6.00 for 1997 the stock will go through
the roof. All of this is possible but lets see some good earnings
reports, some insider buying, some hot product DELIVERY announcements
before we get too excited. Count me hopeful but a little wary.
