It's not that anyone thinks SUNW doesn't have great products, I think they do.
It's just the further Wall Street looks down the road, the more difficult things look for SUNW maintaining its current profit margins, and for that matter its competive position. CPQ, DELL, HP, MSFT and INTC have their crosshairs on the sweet spot of SUNW product line.
Like it or not, when NT first came out and the Pentium line was just starting in '92, they posed no real threat and McNealy laughed and the analysts and CIO's took a wait and see attitude. Today, six years later in '98 I think it fair to say that attitudes at least among analysts and CIO is changing. One can draw their own conclusions for the next six years - as MERCED, updated NT software, backoffice, and such continue to improve and further narrow SUNW's lead.
It's not all about a state of being, one must also factor in the state of becoming.
