Ron, you sure ask a lot of questions. :-) I wish I had all the answers. Here's a few:
"One million iden units in service now, and shipped it's millionth second generation (i370?). Does this make sense to you, or am I easily confused?"

I suspect that some of the 1st generation units are in use by non-NXTL providers.

"Since Nextel wasn't (isn't) active in these ares in October 1997, I must assume there are more providers of iden phones than we are aware of."

Clearnet, partially owned by NXTL, is the Canadian iDEN provider so we have an interest in that venture. Southern Co. is a small local provider out of Georgia. The rest are apparently small potatos.

"Does this include the second generation units described in the Oct. 1997 article?" Yes.

"How many are Nextel's networks?"

U.S., Canada (through Clearnet), Mexico, and the ones being built are NXTL International's. I'm under the impression that NXTL is also building a system in Argentina.

Here's some interesting food for thought: NXTL is located in Virginia, Nextel International is located in Seattle, also the home of Teledesic. Coincidence? I don't think so.
