American International Petroleum operates refineries and explores for oil and natural gas. Its American International Refinery (AIR) subsidiary owns refinery in Louisiana; AIR plans to produce asphalt, vacuum gas oil, and other products at the refinery in late 1997 or in 1998. In July 1997, American International Petroleum acquired a 70% interest in a 4.7 million acre concession in Kazakhstan that may contain recoverable reserves of about 450 million barrels of oil. The company plans to seek other gas- and oil-exploration projects in the U.S. and abroad.
