The thread is quiet, but my mind has been busy. While SGI lumbers along toward its rendezvous with Microsoft, the landscape has been changing. First: the fall of Compaq. I have always regarded Compaq as an example of the kind of marketing powerhouse that SGI should emulate -- a company that would be the hardest competition for SGI in NT-space. Now I see it is being nudged aside by direct sellers like Dell. SGI was being eroded from underneath -- now INTEL and Compaq are being eaten from underneath too. Its like the whole place has termites! Many have been critical of SGI because of its high prices and disdain for the consumer -- but to me that nitch suddenly looks like valuable property for a company that deals through VAR channels.

Intel -- suddenly falling under the curve. Could it be that their chip architecture is getting a little long in the tooth? After twenty years of making x86 chips, maybe their upgrade path isn't sufficiently enticing to make people recycle their old computers. I wonder if consumers might be tempted by "S"omethin"G" more "I"nteresting.

I don't take the Kodak merger rumors seriously. SGI is very focused, and I think the new CEO will want to keep his new company.

I agree that @Home, the company with the world's silliest name, is showing amazing strength, and I wish I had overcome my reluctance at paying incredible premiums to buy some. I think as they snap up a big chunk of internet traffic, they may turn out to be a surprising wild card for SGI. I hope to get @Home myself in a week or two. (installed, that is. I still can't bring myself to buy some at current prices.)

We are now entering the SGI pre-announcement period. Stock may be subject to sudden drops. Wear seatbelts at all times, and keep tranquilizers handy. I anticipate more nervous tracking within this trading range. I am HOPING to hear nothing. If the company stays quiet, the stock may start an amazing climb in about two weeks. --JD
