In a large part, the internet and internet traders are responsible.
Although the internet is a valuable tool for information, it also allows hypesters to lead novice traders with get rich dreams into momentum trading with "It's going to explode"(in your face), "I'm buying more in the morning"(when they're really selling), "You better hurry this one's taking off"(no time for DD)(and BTW they're taking off with your money), "There's a Short Squeeze"(the only thing that's going to get squeezed is in your shorts), and the ever popular "News release on the way"(good, bad, maybe someday). People are also basically lazy and would rather trust bad information that others give them than spend the time and money to check it for themselves.
The internet, because of all the excitement generated (legitimate and not), also makes normally rational patient people a little bit nuts and that's not taking into account the ones that already are. They become frantic because everyone else is getting rich or at least it seems that way. "I'm staying in this one long term" and then in a couple of weeks "What's wrong with this dog - I'm outta here". In the real market "long term" means YEARS not weeks. So they run from one stock to the next never staying long enough for the stock to establish a new base and move again. This further damages the stock causing even more people to bail.

There's a lot more, but this will do for a while.
You've probably heard most of this before anyway..... and that's why it's going down.
