Christine, clearly you know little of Christianity, so please don't jump to conclusions. Taking a verse out of context is very easy to do with the Bible; therefore it is always wise to read the verses both before and after a particular quote, until you begin to see what the verses are talking about. Would you for instance, dive into the Torah (Jewish holy book), or the Koran (Moslem holy book), and come to conclusions about the Jewish religion or the Islamic religion, after reading one or two verses? That wouldn't make any sense either.
As for the reference to 1 Corinthians, chapter 6, verse 9, let's continue with verses 10, 11 and 12. Prior to verse 9 is a different subject, I've already checked that. So verse 10 continues to list corruptions:
1 Corinthians, Chapter 6 (emphasis added)
6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expediant: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
When it says, all things are lawful, it refers to the fact that when someone is *sanctified (to make holy) by Christ, they are not condemned by their sins: people do not become sinless in the natural sense once they become believers in Christ.
But through Christ, prayer, and help from the Holy Spirit, it is hoped and expected that a Christian will attempt to do good works rather than bad works:
Philemon 2:13: It is God which worketh in you both to will and do do of his good pleasure. Colossians 1:10: Be fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.
* sanctify means to make holy. Specifically in the case of Christianity, sanctification is defined very well in Hebrews ch. 10, verses 10 and 14: 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected forever them are sanctified. |
