Christine,

>>I suspect that some of the things in the Bible that can be interpreted rigidly really made sense at the time the Bible was written.

Yes, I agree. A Psychiatrist friend of mine and I both arrived at the conclusion that much of human behavior which seems irrational can be explained by mentally putting that behavior into a primitive era. Older men's attraction to younger women may have originated as a simple yen for the fertility of those younger women. Also because women often died young from childbirth complications. And the modern inexplicable situation of an abused woman not leaving her man may be thought of as adaptive if in the primitive state, where a lone woman and her offspring were easy prey for any male.

I am not immediately familiar with the old biblical laws, although the dietary restrictions may have made a lot of sense in that era. The "seed spilling" refers to Onan, who, as I recall, had sex with another man's wife and practiced withdrawal. Certainly not conducive to propagation of the species. Also the prohibition of sex during menstruation would make perfect sense even in this era of aids, since the virus may be much more easily transmitted into the open vascular spaces. You could try this bible link which another poster left yesterday. I haven't had time to get into it, but it looks as though it has lots of search capabilities:

Best regards,

Jack
