Zoran Digital Audio Signal Processors Used in Academy Award Winning Design Zoran's Kirk Handley Receives Scientific and Technical Award From the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Work Done While At Dolby Laboratories
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 1998--Zoran Corp. (NASDAQ:ZRAN - news), the world's leading supplier of Dolby Digital AC-3 decoders, announced today that Kirk Handley, DSP Software Project Engineer, has received a Scientific and Technical Award for leading the design, development, and implementation of the Dolby CP500 Digital Cinema Processor.
The CP500 is a next generation cinema processor based on Zoran digital audio IC technology. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded a plaque to Handley, and four other technical staff members of Dolby Laboratories, who comprised the CP500 team, for significantly advancing Cinema Processor technology.
''We are very pleased to learn of Kirk Handley's recognition by the Academy for the work he did at Dolby Laboratories. His contributions helped make the CP500 a superior, state of the art product, in keeping with Dolby Laboratories' reputation of being the world wide leading supplier of top motion picture theater sound equipment,'' said Paul Goldberg, vice president Audio Products and Intellectual Properties for Zoran Corp.
''It was most gratifying to have Zoran Digital Audio Processors selected for this leading design,'' he said.
The CP500, a multi-input cinema processor which accepts optical, magnetic, digital, and microphone inputs for complete theater sound management, uses three Zoran processors for Dolby Digital AC-3 decoding, Dolby matrix decoding (for the analog tracks), and multi-band equalization of the three front and two rear surround channels.
Designed for digital audio signal processing, the Zoran processors allow simultaneous front and split surround speaker equalization to be achieved in a cost effective design, at distortion levels typically below 0.05%, and over 92 dB dynamic range.
The CP500 provides twenty-seven 1/3 octave band equalization for each of the three front speakers, plus nine octave-band equalization for each of the rear speakers. This enables well balanced sound to be coaxed from even the most demanding theater venues.
The use of Zoran signal processors helped pack state of the art digital audio processing capability in the CP500's compact 7 inch high rack mounted chassis, leaving plenty of rack space for the increased number of amplifiers necessitated by multi-channel surround sound.
