UMC, Virtual Silicon ink pact
TAIPEI, Taiwan--U.S.-based Virtual Silicon Technology Inc. and Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) here announced a multi-year joint marketing and technology development agreement, which adds intellectual property (IP) support for chip designs using UMC's 0.25-micron process technology.

Under the agreement, Diplomat-25 standard cell libraries from Virtual Silicon of Sunnyvale, Calif., will be available to IC customers of UMC's foundry services. To ensure working silicon, the two companies said they will collaborate on developing test chips to derive key reliability data, establish timing correlation and verify IP cores.

"We are very pleased to be able to offer our customers a new source of distinctive quality 0.25-micron libraries," said Wen Huang, director of UMC's Design Services Division. "Virtual Silicon's years of library experience have culminated in a unique methodology that captures process knowledge, hand-packed density and EDA synergy. The portable Diplomat's rules broaden the availability of silicon-proven IP's for our customers."
