( BW)(METROMEDIA-INTERNATIONAL)(MMG) Metromedia International Group Expands Its Addressable Paging Market By Implementing New Paging Protocol
STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 1998--Metromedia International Group, Inc.'s (MMG:Amex) wholly-owned subsidiary, Metromedia International Telecommunications Inc. (MITI), announced today that its Radio Paging Group has implemented the use of high-speed FLEX protocol paging in Romania. Metromedia joint venture Communicatii Nationale Mobile S. A.(CNM)now provides nationwide FLEX paging in Romania.
FLEX is a high-speed paging protocol developed by Motorola. FLEX paging allows a significant increase in the number of customers that can utilize the system. CNM is employing Motorola's paging infrastructure equipment to generate FLEX. This technical enhancement will allow significant growth opportunities for CNM, as well as the potential for two-way and voice paging.
"Because of the launch of our Calling Party Pays (CPP) service in Romania, we needed to consider a high-speed protocol that would allow us to maximize our channel capacity. Between FLEX and ERMES, we chose FLEX because of the gradual progression in transmission speeds and system buildout, versus an immediate system buildout that would have been required with ERMES", said John Duffy, VP of Paging Operations. The first FLEX pager will be put into service in March.
Metromedia International Group, Inc., through its wholly owned subsidiary, Metromedia International Telecommunications, Inc. (MITI), operates communications and media businesses in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and other emerging markets including wireless cable television stations; FM radio stations; radio paging operations; an international toll calling service; Trunked Mobile Radio systems, and GSM cellular operations. Through its 57% ownership of Metromedia Asia Corporation, MITI operates ventures supporting wired telephone network and GSM cellular system operations in China.
