Great article find. This corroborates previous articles in Computer Reseller News and elsewhere that PC sales are robust in terms of units shipped and overall sales for computing environment stuff in dollar terms is up - spurred by the lower prices. Intel's rhetoric (big lie) is that PC sales are less than expected overall and that the downturn in business is not caused primarily due to their lack of leadership (pilfering of the monopolistic trust?) in the sub $1000 catergory. Intel's desire to maneuver the market to follow the path to ever higher costs (PII) was devoid of clear thinking - why would the public wholeheartedly endorse higher costs for no or, at best, marginally better performance?

"Non-Intel-based PCs represented 60 percent of Compaq retail systems and 71 percent of IBM retail systems sold in January. Overall, retail PC unit sales increased 30 percent and revenue was essentially unchanged in January, compared with January 1997, ASW reported"

The mystique of the "Intel Inside" mantra is wearing very thin.
