Say son,
Not sure what ya mean here...
1) "Macs don't use 3D accelerators" - it's just a driver. The hardware is mostly all PCI. I'm not a Mac fan by any means (sick of all the bitching) but I can't imagine the accelerator folks ignoring potential market.
2) How do you code for NT on a Mac? What's the point you trying to make?
3) There is a massive shake-up going on in the 3D chip market. It would be silly to base a marketing plan on one chip. Cirrus is selling their patents, S3's faltered big time and is in serious legal straits, Intel is ready to move in, VooDoo ShmooDoo, TDLabs, yaaa, yaaa, on and on. Bottom line - margins are deathly thin on the semis.
4) Some notes off the PR:
With expanded file support, Painter 3D will include plug-ins that will enable artists to interactively work with MetaCreations' Ray Dream Studio, Ray Dream 3D and 3D Studio MAX from Kinetix. -- Good move right off the bat. Go after the MAX market.
With support for OBJ, 3DMF and DXF file formats, Painter 3D will allow 3D designers to easily import a file in these formats and begin painting directly onto the model. -- OBJ is support is key. Just about every upcoming 3D authoring tool outputs OBJ and then it can be moved into VRML1 or 2. In an indirect way, it opens up designers to the Web.
Let's STOP talking about the past and look at the current state and future prospects (product wise).
Currently the line card looks very good. Mid-priced products targeted at the masses unlike the MAX, SoftImage, etc. The retailers I speak with like Meta, they just aren't sure were to place the products except for Soap. This is true with the entire 3D market. It's so new that the retailers are taking a "wait and see" approach on how to setup their shelves.
The distributors I speak with are noting an increased volume (mostly the lower priced products but that pulls your line card into sight with the Product Managers at the Distys).
Trader Dave is right... it's wait time. Plus, it's the slow period for all channels. Execution does not happen overnight if you want it done right and the timing for this new CEO is pretty good for fall execution.
And for neko - one more post and it's webmistress time. She can bar your access for frivolous posts and since it's past March, you'll have to pay for you access! |
