Michael,

"The study by Internet service provider Avalon Networks, Inc. shows that behind the promise of using regular copper telephone lines to support 7M bit/sec Internet access lies the reality that DSL is an immature technology susceptible to failure when faced with real network conditions."

My Study of ISP's shows that 98% they are immature at understanding how to implement ADSL (not HDSL ISP's are much further along here).

Avalon last November began testing modems from seven vendors on 17 regular copper phone lines leased from US WEST, Inc. The goal was to find out whether modems at either end of the lines could connect, and if so, at what speeds. Avalon found that speeds declined as line length increased and eventually the modems couldn't connect at all.

Amazing! They Found the Laws of Physics Work...............

US Worst Inc. has some of the poorest lines in the US. Avalon has been plagued with line cuts, and connection problems over the past year due to US West construction.

Besides the Reconnect Time there is no other information provided by Avalon on Amati's DMT Modems. I'll be looking for their Full results @ dsl.avalon.net when it becomes available. But I won't rely on their data, Avalon has only been an operating ISP for 3 years ( A phone call confirmed my suspicions).

Which ever ADSL modem manufacture they choose, they need to work hand in hand with them to understand all the specifics.

I prefer to rely on tele.com (www.teledotcom.com) who have real engineers testing ADSL modems, in cooperation with the manufactures.

DSL Modems So Far, So Good
The Amati Overture 8 modem configured for 4-Mbit/s
performance and the PairGain Megabit Modem also
demonstrated a high level of consistency across the distance
tests for both raw speed and FTP traffic. With both these
products, however, tests covering distances over 12,000 feet
were not applied because in both cases the vendors said their
products weren't intended to work over lines greater than
12,000 feet.
