I think that Sun will make only stuff with which they can make a profit. Scott has been smart enough to let his software and hardware operations compete independently. Thus they have evolved somewhat separate strategies which I think could be stated as follows:

Software - Be the best Unix OS on the most popular platforms.

Hardware - Be the best platform for Unix.

Hense the software support for Merced.

As for Merced hardware, I have not scene or heard any interest at Sun to get into a what may become a commodity platform architecture. I doubt we will ever see Sun Merced hardware. And therefore we may see the demise of Sun hardware!
