Robert -

Thanks for your feedback.

As you point out, Intel controls the standards it uses in its CISC processors. In future processors, whether they are CISC, a CISC/RISC combination, or purely RISC, they will also control compatibility standards. Their continued control of standards will enable them to maintain their effective control of the PC-compatible market.

If MSFT is able to produce a version of NT which neutralizes the benefits of Intel's standards, then control of the PC-compatible market will have shifted entirely into MSFT's hands. The user would install the version of NT designed for his box, but from then on he wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an Intel box or any other. He could walk into any computer store, buy some NT-compatible software, and install it on his computer, regardless of whether its an Intel, Dec, or Sun system. This is the danger.

Do you know how difficult it is for MSFT to accomplish this? Is it even possible? What are the technical hurdles and how big are they?
