I concur, computer pricing is independent of the need for power backup. The reason I buy a UPS is so I won't loose my valuable work during a power failure. What I paid for the computer is trivial compared to the value of what I do with it! If the productivity curve continues, the work done on computers will increase in value as the value of the computer itself declines. This makes power backup more valuable as time goes on.

With deregulation and power wheeling, outages and brownouts will increase. Computers that are strictly entertainment may"?" never need UPS at any computer price level.
