Thanks for your response. I understand why there are shorters at these levels. I guess I didn't make myself clear when I asked for a "mathematically compelling" case for a short position...

What I was asking was: could some math whiz look at the float, and look at trading logs over the past few weeks, and come up with evidence that more shares have been sold than exist in the float (or is there any other method of reliably unearthing a short position?).

I think if this can be demonstrated and is reasonably verifiable, a cert campaign can be successfully launched, and will get support from the bulk of investors. The key to this is that the short position must be somehow publicly verifiable as I don't think you'll find investors jumping on the cert train in blind faith again.
