Product Applications
Baseball:
Used for broadcasting, coaching and game strategy purposes, SuperVisionSM optically tracks the ball from the moment it leaves the pitcher's hand until it crosses the plate, then graphically displays the speed, path and trajectory of the baseball. Broadcasters can add a new dimension to their presentation of the game by being able to show and describe the actual speed, movement and path of a thrown ball. Importantly, SuperVisionSM can generate revenue for the television networks by creating a new medium for advertiser sponsorship. The system is also an aid to players, coaches and team management. To date, SuperVisionSM has been used by the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Florida Marlins, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, Detroit Tigers, Oakland A's, Cleveland Indians and San Francisco Giants during games which aired over various networks. Most recently SupervisionSM was contracted by NBC for their coverage of the 1997 Major League Baseball World Series and National League Championship Series. The system is leased on a per season basis, with the market for the 30 major League Baseball teams estimated at $10 million per year.
Efforts are under way to introduce SuperVisionSM internationally, with a strong emphasis on Japanese and Australian professional baseball. Revenues from international baseball could exceed $3 million per year.
SuperScoutTM is a statistical analysis/data based software program featuring the most comprehensive array of information for scouting, coaching and team management purposes. The system is an aid for scouting prospects and evaluating players in baseball. The Detroit Tigers are now using SuperScoutTM to scout and evaluate other teams and players. Discussions are ongoing with several Major League teams. Management estimates the market for SuperScoutTM for Major League Baseball at $2.5 million per year.
Golf:
GolfProViewTM optically tracks and positions the golf ball, then displays in real-time 3-dimensional graphics a wealth of information, including the optimal putt path, taking into account the contour and conditions of the green. GolfProViewTM premiered during the World Cup of Golf on November 11th & 12th, 1995 on NBC from Shenzen, China. Since its premiere, GolfProViewTM has been used during four additional international tournaments.
The Sports Network (TSN) contracted to use GolfProViewTM version 2.0 for their broadcast of the Greater Vancouver Open, August 22-25, 1996. Following this event, QuesTec and Silicon Graphics engineers worked together on advancing the look of GolfProViewTM. The system now creates a 3-dimensional virtual world for each green model through the addition of digital images of the green's surroundings. This technology was aired worldwide during the 1996 World Cup Golf Tournament from Cape Town, South Africa and the 1996 Million Dollar Challenge from Sun City, South Africa. Most recently GolfProViewTM was aired nationally in Canada this past August during the 1997 Greater Vancouver Open. Negotiations with various networks and sponsors for the use of GolfProViewTM are in progress. GolfProViewTM is currently being marketed for use on a per tournament or a complete tour basis. The international market for GolfProViewTM is estimated to be $6 million per year.
Football, Cricket and Other Sports:
QuesTec is currently developing a virtual replay system for Football in conjunction with Silicon Graphics. VRS FootballTM will graphically display such information as ball location and player movement.
QuesTec has received several requests to develop a SuperVisionSM system for use as an officiating and broadcast enhancement for international cricket. The audience for cricket on an international basis is 5 times that of baseball. The company plans to begin development as soon as the necessary resources are allocated.
Other sports applications include rugby, soccer, basketball, tennis, NASCAR and boat racing.
Video Games and Internet Broadcasting:
Questec's technology can be adapted to video games which will utilize the database information captured and stored from our products. This data can produce definitive replication of a live sporting event for video games and real-time interactive internet broadcasting. QuesTec's data and motion capture technology allow networks to produce live interactive internet broadcasts in conjunction with their live television broadcasts. QuesTec is in talks with several video game producers and television networks for such applications.
Commercial and Industrial Applications:
QuesTec's core tracking technology extends to industrial applications through EagleEyeTM, an advanced and cost effective computer based security and surveillance system. By using technology that tracks and monitors moving targets and automatically "hands-off" camera views, precise monitoring of subjects can now be achieved. There is interest by the casino industry for this technology. Other markets would include surveillance of retail stores, sporting events, and airports. Additional development will continue as soon as the necessary resources are allocated.
