BEIJING - The Chinese government says that the number of people using the Internet in the world's most populous nation has increased more than 30-fold in just five years.

The state news service, Xinhua, quoted a report from the Data Communication Department of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications as saying 620,000 people now use the Net in China, up from 20,000 in 1993. The number of Internet subscribers was expected to more than triple to top 2 million by the end of the century, the report said. Private analysts see a steeper growth path and have forecast as many as 7 million users by 2001.

More than 60 percent of Internet surfers are between 20 and 30 years old, the report said. Their main interests are information, business, and finance. The report said although China had more than 100 Internet service providers, or companies offering access to the network, few carried political, economic, or social information on China.
