Looks like this "Battle of the Network Stars" is really happening.

Does Lucent have enough remote access expertise with its acquistion of Livingston or is there an alliance in the works?

The only two possibilities that come to mind are ASND or 3COM.
Lucent did recently announce that its 56k modem chips are now interoperable with 3COM modems and are compatible with the ITU V.90 standard... kiss and make up.

Bill's list is the roadmap to who the ultimate DSL players will be...

<<
1) Alcatel + Hayes

2) Nortel/Cisco/Netspeed

3) #1- Fujitsu/Orctf or #2-(Siemens/Orctf or LU/Orctf)

4) Lucent/Westell for the existing LU products + "A/THE leading CPE vendor"

5) Ericsson/Awre/ADI >>

Another I can add is Nokia/Diamond Lane.

Players in search of dance partners:
ASND
3COM
PAIR
Paradyne
Tut Systems (what happened to these guys?)
and a bunch of micro DSL privates

There is an obvious move to offering end-to-end, voice/data/video solutions. Companies that don't team up will be left to wither on the vine. The Nortel/Cisco/Netspeed powerhouse will put pressure on the rest of the players to get their acts togther. WSTL looks to be in solid position with its big brother LU.
