NEC now has DLP projector to compete with Vidikron. It appears the feature set of business projectors now include TV standards. NEC has deep pockets, does anyone think NEC will take it a step farther and enter the Projection TV market?

NEC TECHNOLOGIES LAUNCHES ULTRA-PORTABLE SINGLE-CHIP DLP PROJECTOR

New Projector Offers Extreme Portability Without Sacrificing Performance or Features

Itasca, Ill., January 27, 1998 - NEC Technologies' Visual Systems Division, a leader in presentation technology solutions for more than a decade, today unveiled one of the world's lightest and brightest ultra-portable SVGA projectors, the MultiSyncr LT80T. The new projector offers extremely bright images of 600 ANSI lumens while weighing in at less than 10 pounds.

As a strategic business partner of Texas Instruments, NEC utilizes TI's Digital Light ProcessingT (DLP) single-chip display technology for a product that is extremely lightweight, yet offers excellent image quality and the features demanded by today's road warrior.

"NEC Technologies continues to push the envelope in portable presentation solutions," said Robert Guentner, product manager for NECT's Visual Systems Division. "Building on the success of the award-winning MultiSync MT Series LCD projectors, the MultiSync LT80 becomes something every notebook computer owner must have, allowing them to conveniently take the power of their desktop projector anywhere in the world."

The ultra-portable projector market is expected to explode during the next two years. Dr. William Coggshall, president of Pacific Media Associates, Mountain View, Cal., reports that this product category will grow by an estimated 411 percent in the U.S. market from 1997 to 1998. That follows 204 percent growth from 1996 to 1997.

"The ultra-portable category, those projectors weighing less than 10 pounds, is the fastest growing segment of the projector market by far," said Coggshall. "Positioned as the most powerful notebook peripheral on the market, ultra-portable projectors are an attractive potential purchase for virtually every traveling professional that gives presentations for a living. And because of their aggressive prices, a larger portion of potential buyers are likely to become actual buyers in 1998 and beyond."

The product was developed in a strategic product development partnership with Plus Corporation and is manufactured in NEC's Nagano, Japan, -based manufacturing facility. This facility is ISO9002-certified and has been manufacturing NEC Technologies' portable LCD and DLPT projection products since 1992, when the company's first generation of the MultiSync MT SeriesT was introduced.

The MultiSync LT80 projector offers many of the features found on NECT's other portable projectors including a full-featured wireless remote control with built-in laser pointer, height adjustment and the industry's most aggressive service program, InstaCareSM.

"Because the MultiSync LT80 is manufactured at one of the most technologically advanced facilities in the world, we can provide our end-users with a service that offers peace-of-mind," explains Guentner. The MultiSync LT80 comes with the assurance of overnight replacement or 72-hour repair and return service in the event of a malfunction -- whether you're on the road or down the hall. NEC Technologies pays for overnight delivery to and from the customer in both the U.S. and Canada.

The new projector offers compatibility with 640x480 (VGA), 832x624 (Mac), 1024x768 (XGA) and 1152x870 (Mac) using NECT's proprietary AccuBlendT intelligent pixel blending technology. Using this revolutionary technology, the projector is capable of displaying compressed resolutions using a complex mathematical algorithm to provide an excellent image that offers remarkably true resolution without the associated expense.

For international travelers, the MultiSync LT80 projector offers a universal power supply and accepts NTSC, NTSC 4.43, PAL and SECAM signals. The product utilizes a 270-watt metal halide lamp with a half-life of 1,000 hours and offers 24-bit color reproduction for 16.7 million colors. The projector is extremely compact, making it ideal for carrying on an airplane, measuring just 9.25" (W) x 12.2" (D) x 3.86" (H) and weighing in at 9.9 pounds. Mobile sales forces will benefit from an in-box training video for end-user training and a quick-start guide for easy set-up. With its built-in audio capabilities, the MultiSync LT80 is an ideal presentation solution for DVD players, VCRs and virtually any other video source.

The MultiSync LT80 projector will begin shipping in early March 1998 with an SRP of $7,695. The projector is available through NEC's nationwide network of audio/visual and computer resellers.
