Wall Street hates the unknown which is why Compaq is having so much trouble now. The enormous savings from the merger may or may not materialize. The losses from the price war as Compaq cleans out their old inventory is a fact. Down the road I'm sure Compaq will make a good profit for those willing to wait. In the meantime there are many investments out there that would provide a better return. Right now I would say that Compaqs credibility rating is rather low. Until you change the public perception this stock isn't going anywhere significant.
