More on the Verifone/HP connection . . .
Haven't turned up anything big from 1998, but as of July 1997 the publication Credit Card Management was reporting that "Hewlett Packard is striking up deals with other electronic commerce players, including software behemoth Microsoft Corp. . . . [I]ts future relationships with Verifone and Microsoft could give HP a major advantage in providing end-to-end systems."
Meanwhile, Microsoft has a product, Merchant Server: "That server, developed with Verifone, enables merchants to sell goods and accept payments from customers using their personal computers."
HP is pushing for an open platform that will allow Oracle, IBM, etc. to also participate.
The bad news, if there is any, is that the e-commerce that HP figured was arriving around now has not yet arrived.
I haven't been able to find any recent discussion of smart card biometrics and Verifone/HP. I think it is next generation stuff, and they are still trying to get this generation adopted through their Smart Card alliances and SET protocols. |
