BOJ gov tells PM wants to resign--govt spokesman

TOKYO, March 12 (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Yasuo Matsushita told Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto that he wants to resign from his post following a bribery scandal at the central bank, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kanezo Muraoka told reporters on Thursday.

Muraoka was responding to questions at a regular news conference about media reports that the central bank governor told Hashimoto of his intention to resign on Wednesday.

Hashimoto told Matsushita he wanted him to remain at his post and fulfil his duties for the time being, Muraoka said.

Muraoka said it was up to the governor to decide whether or not to resign.

The government has not started discussions on Matsushita's replacement, Muraoka said.

On Wednesday, prosecutors arrested a senior BOJ official for allegedly taking bribes from major commercial banks in exchange for information about the central bank's market operations.
