Another industry giant throws its hat into the ring. "Block's Compuserve Inc. on-line service on Tuesday announced a deal that allows users to make
long-distance telephone calls over the Internet using their computer.

Although the service is being promoted as a way to make long-distance calls for the price of a local
call, users of Internet Phone will be billed normal Compuserve charges -- $9.95 for five hours and
$2.95 for each additional hour.

Compuserve plans to make the software available sometime this spring, said spokeswoman Gail B.
Whitcomb. The software, which retails for $69, will be available from Compuserve for the cost of
downloading -- probably about $20.

Users need a local telephone line, computer, modem and a connection to the Internet to use the
service. The computer needs a sound card, speakers and microphone."
