Global chip sales rise to $10.97 bln in Jan -- SIA
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 11 (Reuters) - The Semiconductor
Industry Association said Wednesday global semiconductor sales
reached $10.97 billion in January, climbing $304 million from
January 1997.
The 2.9 percent year-to-year increase made January 1998 the
second strongest January of the 1990s.
Europe topped year-to-year growth among world markets,
boosting sales 10.5 percent from January 1997. The Americas and
Asia-Pacific markets also had large sales gains from 1997,
jumping 7.3 percent and 7.0 percent, respectively. In Japan,
however, sales continued to fall, decreasing 12.8 percent from
year-ago levels.
All major markets showed sales declines from December to
January. Sales in the American, European and Japanese markets
dipped by 3 percent, 2.2 percent and 7 percent, respectively.
