Availability of service is undoubtedly an important consideration. For most computer buyers, I would rate it the #1 consideration. Since when your motherboard or your CD-ROM or whatever go bad, there's not much you can do short of replacement ...

However if you stick with well-known Taiwanese motherboard mfgs like Abit and Asus, you'll generally be ok. I'm just parroting Tom Pabst here; I certainly haven't worked with a large enough sample to make any statistically valid quality evaluation. As to Dell, I've never worked with a Dell box in my life so I have nothing useful to say there. I can tell you with some confidence to avoid Compaq though. <g>
