The biggest problem with non-Intel platforms has been the availability of software for NT. The Alpha/PPC/MIPS versions of NT would r un DOS and Windows 16 applications in emulation mode (albeit more slowly than on an ix86 machine), but true Win32 applications had to be specifically built for the other platforms - which few mainstream applications were.

That may be changing. Alpha has their new FX!32 (or some combination of those characters) technology which uses emulation to run 32 bit Intel applications, and slowly translates them to native Alpha code and saves these translated versions. Motorola has been demonstrating its own Win32 emulation technology as well recently.

MIPS machines for NT seem to be dying out fast. Although at one time these were looked at as a great opportunity for NT, I don't believe there are any vendors still selling MIPS based NT boxes.

Will this affect Intel's dominance of the PC market? I wish I knew. These other processors will offer options to people who want specialized solutions, but I still see little incentive to switch platforms at this point.
