Two positive items from today's IBD:
**
The Semiconductor Industry Association said semiconductor sales reached $10.97 billion in January, climbing 2.9% from a year earlier. That made it the second-strongest January of the '90s. Europe topped growth, boosting sales 10.5%. Growth in the Americas was 7.3% and in Asia 7%. Sales in Japan, however, decreased 12.8%. And all major markets had lower sales from December to January of this year.

The U.S. is expected to see 15.4% growth [in computer sales], down from 19% last year. The '98 global personal computer market is expected to grow 13.4% and reach unit volume of 90.6 million, says market researcher International Data Corp. That's down from 15.2% in '97, when 79.9 million units were sold. Solid demand for PCs in regions such as the U.S., Western Europe and Latin America continue to offset weakness in many Asian markets.
