Tom, I believe rewritable CD and DVD drives function by changing
an internal layer from crystalline to amorphous and thus modifying
the laser reflectivity. Unlike the magnetic mechanism on floppies
and hard drives (and also Zip and Jaz) which can be switched back
and forth forever, this chemical change on CD/DVD disks can only
be flipped back and forth in a limited way. The specs on rewritable
CDs say 1000 times is the max that can be expected. Therefore,
they will be an alternative to Zips and Jaz if used only for
backups or storage, but they will not be competitive where they
are used over and over or if the data, images, etc. must be changed.
