True, but the only reason other less-expensive nonlinear options weren't reviewed was that all these systems offered at least some real-time FX. Avid's MCXpress starts at around $30K, and to get their best video quality (AVR 75) is another $4,500 option. Data Translation's Media 100 will be offering real-time effects starting next month, I believe, and offers a simple upgrade from their entry-level Media 100qx at $4K, all the way up to their flagship full-blown system.

I still feel that over the next 6 months to a year, Data Translation's lower-cost (and in some cases better features/quality) line of nonlinear systems will be more profitable. Avid just had their biggest quarter ever ($115 million according to their preliminary announcement) and they still couldn't make a dime. Yes, they still have the best overall products and the most popular systems in the industry, but they have failed miserably over the past year to turn this advantage into rewards for shareholders. I'm currently holding onto both DATX and AVID, although I wished I'd gotten back out of Avid when it recovered slightly back to $16.
