Here is my contribution to the category of pure speculation. I envision Loral acquiring L-Star and its 2 sats(16 Ku-band transponders each) and the 4 orbital slots. Along with this, they announce a deal with ViaSat to use several of the L-Star transponders to supply GEO based telephony to SE Asia, as a potential prelude to G* GEO sats filling in for the lack of capacity to provide fixed service in the mobile G* system. Problems with this scenario? One big one is the conflicts with service providers who are handling the G* mobile service. If they are not maxed out on capacity, they would complain that this GEO service is eating into their market--not a good way to start out. Price is an issue as well since this GEO service could conceivably be priced at pennies, or even a single penny per minute and be extremely profitable. I welcome any and all comments, especially if you are the head of Globalstar/Loral and would like to fill us in on the strategy!
