Here below is an excerpt from the Yahoo thread:

This is originally by user ATMtech on Yahoo thread. I have just edited
a little.

There are a number of present day technologies that benefit:

Healthcare, Broadcasting, Corporate telephony(every business with more than 25 DID phone lines), every
business wanting to maintain & acquire ISO 9000+ status(corporate intranet), proponents of electronic
commerce, government, etc.

These companies want voice over IP, distance learning, medical imaging, remote offices, video servers, video
conferencing and high definition broadcasts. Just to save money (need + greed)

To leverage the present day technologies that all of the above want to use, ATM (not gigabit ethernet or fast e or
FDDI/CDDI or wireless) is the only technology ( of all invented by the human race) that delivers Qualities of
Service (QOS) (low latency) to make them happen. In the LAN (private atm)

As well, every time a business purchases Frame relay T1/E1, SMDS, OC3, service to the internet an RBOC and
an ISP is channeling this traffic over ATM switches (gosh at least two separate ATM networks all public ATM).
The RBOCs have to assemble ATM switches together every time they build a SONET ring to meet the
requirements of call centers and companies with lots of voice and data. As well these companies are buying
Customer Premise Equipment (more freaking ATM switches i.e. 36150 Newbridge)

Newbridge and Siemens are the undisputed world leaders in public ATM, STM, and TDM multiplexing.

Many of NN's affiliate companies specialize in the technologies that all of the above companies want to leverage.
(the want them because they know that they will save money if they implement them)

(LAN space)

Private companies are not buying more FDDI It's too expensive and it's too easy to outgrow. It does interface
nicely into an
ATM edge device. So present FDDI users are expanding and supplementing with ATM. Companies will buy
NN because it is standards
based MPOA. You don't have to buy a bunch of routers (routers are really slow! you lose QOS!). Have you
priced CSCO 7500 series
routers? you have buy a bunch to assemble a CSCO ethernet or ATM solution. Every other player in the LAN
ATM arena uses LANE (one big
flat network) except newbridge!

Gigabit Ethenet
Messy high overhead traffic is just passed on, latency is implemented every time you cross a switch (therefore no
QOS)and you have to buy $$$ routers just to keep the traffic off of one big huge network (all traffic is bursty
data). Gigabit E has lots of overhead (big expensive processors in every switch) This solution is just as expensive
as ATM with no QOS to leverage Video, Voice (every company wants to lower the phone bill) Data (every
computer can be only one hop away on ATM)

Fast Ethernet
Fast ethernet remains the LAN distribution equipment under Newbridge's VIVID solution. Companies don't have
to yank out and replace the entire network. They can migrate to ATM as they go. As well they can enjoy the
potential of a nice non-competitive relationship with 3COM.

You can get there from here with NN, siemens, 3com or a Newbridge Affiliate.

Have you been paying attention? This is an all cash business. NN has no debt. This is a real company with
tangible products all standards based and bleeding edge. I'll sell you Cisco routers if you're stupid enough to buy them for an enterprise solution!
