In a first for the world's telecommunications industry, IRIDIUM, the soon to be inaugurated global
mobile telephone network, has been assigned its own country code (+8816) by the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The assignment effectively means that IRIDIUM has become an individual nation - at least in the
eyes of the world's governing telecommunications body.

IRIDIUM users subscribing direct to the IRIDIUM service, at commercial launch in September
of this year, can be reached on one number, pre-fixed by the Iridium code +8816.

"To recognise IRIDIUM as a country is a groundbreaking decision by the ITU, and one which
echoes IRIDIUM's own pioneering attributes", said Thomas Loewenthal, managing director of
Iridium Communications Germany (ICG).

"However", he continued, "we see ourselves as the only country on earth which has absolutely no
borders, no boundaries and no trade or currency restrictions whatsoever! Iridium is the first 'virtual
country' and will be the first truly global mobile telephone system."
