Let, This is from 1st article you linked to ... about one of Microsofts objectives: <<Automating database administration and tuning. For example, indices could be automatically be added, dropped, or adjusted based on query results over a predefined time period.>> If you read between the lines here you would be able to see why Microsoft may be interested in the Nucleus database engine.
