Mephisto - now or later?

Consider this. If you normally buy 100 shares, buy only 50. The price will probably continue going up before a split (I recall that someone posted that Merck generally splits somewhere between 140 and 150). If you bought 50 @ 129 your cost would be $6450, but then after a 2/1 split you'd have 100 shares @ $64.50 per share. If you wait until after a split (say 2 for 1) you may end up paying $75 per share for your 100. Unless of course you wait for a price dip back to $64.50 (it might take awhile).

This is an approach I've used to buy several stocks. It seems to work pretty good on strong blue chip stocks. Someone pointed out to me on one of the other threads that not all stock go up after a split. But I sorta think if Merck splits, there's going to be a lot of folks out there who'd like to own it, which will put buying pressure on it. It will eventually settle back some, but how long are you willing to wait.

The other way to look at this is just to decide what you're willing to spend and buy shares for that amount. Most folks consider Merck as a blue chip core stock.... so anytime you invest will probably be the right time.
