I think it's important to pay attention to the issues you raise. Anybody who takes one look at the PE (now 359) can tell pretty quickly that there is risk here.

One point you didn't mention -- I've read that the stationary power market for fuel cells is potentially BIGGER than the market for auto engines, so even if fuel cells don't power autos, the market is still huge. I also think that many users of stationary fuel cells would be willing to pay a premium for quiet, clean power. Sail boat owners, for example.
